The United State's Postal Services' Statue of Liberty stamp is in fact not based upon the Statue of liberty in New York City. The stamp is actually based off of the replica located in front of the New York-New York casino hotel in Las Vegas.
Postal officials say they were not aware of this until it was pointed out to them by a stamp expert. They say the photo the stamp was designed from was licensed only as "Statue of Liberty". Officials of the USPS also say that they are happy with the stamp and have no plans to remove the stamp, originally issued in December, out of circulation.
