On Facebook, when users receive a friend request, they can either choose to "accept request" or hit "ignore", which erases the request forever. In the next few days, Facebook plans to eliminate the "ignore" button and replace it with a "not now" button, which will put the request in a "hidden requests" folder. This makes it so that one can look back at all requests denied, and accept them at any point in the future if they wish. You can also mark the request to show that you do not know the person requesting, which helps facebook prevent abuse.
“This helps our systems get better at detecting unwanted behavior on the site and we can use that information to prevent abuse from that person in the future,” said a Facebook representative.
