The U.S. Senate voted on Saturday to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which prevented openly gay men and women from joining the military. Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman and eight Republicans joined the Democrats in their support for repealing the legislation. The vote finally passed in a 65-31 majority. The bill has been sent to President Barack Obama, who has stated that he will sign the bill into law next week. In an e-mail to supporters, Obama added, "Gay and lesbian service members- brave Americans who enable our freedoms- will no longer have to hide who they are. The fight for civil rights, a struggle that continues, will no longer include this one."
